🌟 Recommendation Details

The Cay is a novel that takes place during World War 2 in which a young boy named Phillip and his mother flee from Curacao in hopes of finding a safer place to live during the war. Unfortunately, the boat that Phillip and his mother fled on was bombed by a German boat, killing most of the passengers except Phillip, a black man named Timothy, and a cat named Stew Cat. Phillip, being white, was forced to set aside his racism in order to work together with Timothy to somehow survive being stranded alone at sea. I recommend this book because it is thrilling and full of adventure and because it highlights the issue of racism at the time. The Cay is a heartfelt and exciting story about the survival of the two castaways and how one of them, Phillip, had to learn to set aside the prejudice that he had been taught as a young white boy in order to be able to work together with Timothy. The book showcases how important it is to look beyond a person's skin color, and rather, to judge them on their character and their actions.
