🌟 Recommendation Details
New Kid is about an African American student named Jordan Banks who is the "new kid" in Riverdale Academy Day School, a prestigious and majority white school that is worlds different from his previous school in his small neighborhood. As one of the few black students and also coming from a somewhat disadvantaged neighborhood, Jordan struggles to fit in as he deals with passive racism and makes few friends. His new and prestigious education creates a rift between him and his old buddies from his old school, and to make matters worse, Jordan faces tough treatment from his homeroom teacher. However, Jordan tries his best to get through the hectic school year by pursuing his hobbies of drawing comics and making art.
I recommend this book because it deals with multitudes of issues plaguing students' lives such as racism, bullying, teacher favoritism, and even financial differences. Since all of these factors affect Jordan's life, this book provides interesting and crucial insight into the life of a student of color who struggles to fit in. Moreover, the book is easy to understand and teaches readers valuable lessons on forgiveness and compassion.

Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?
My Recommendation:
Newbery Medal Winner
Although it is a lower level book, it doesn't take away how dynamic, expressive, and funny this graphic novel is. It touches real life problems such as the hostility of others but still being appropriate for kids.
