Before we talk about Light, let's talk about two of my favorite book genres: Sci-Fi and dystopia. I liked Sci-Fi because there's literally so many places it could go. Aliens? Time travel? Anomalies? Cyborgs? Talking animals (Certain types)? Even some forms of magic are included in the world of Sci-Fi. Then dystopias are great because oppressed societies are also awesome. In the media, I mean. There are plenty of great gems in the dystopian world, and it's not just limited to books, either. Fahrenheit 451!The Hunger Games (Both the books and the movies)!Blade Runner! All three games that Project Moon has made! Now that I've expressed my undying love for the two genres, let's talk about Michael Grant's book series Gone…and how he combined the two genres. The plot to theGoneseries is actually pretty simple. The main story spans over six books (technically there's nine, but I'm not counting Monster, Villain, and Hero) and mainly follows the perspective of our protagonist, Sam Temple, although the POV does switch from character to character from time to time. Anyway, the story takes place in the town of Perdido Beach, California, where for some inexplicable reason, a massive, mysterious Dome has appeared over the entire town. The Dome is extremely large, managing to encompass the entire town of Perdido Beach, the nearby Coates Academy, some of the sea, an old mineshaft, and a couple of lakes and forests. Also, every single man, woman, and child over the age of fifteen simply disappears. They are Gone, and only the children of Perdido Beach remain. They soon realize that they are trapped inside the town, which, also quite unfortunately, has limited food and water sources. It also doesn't help that some kids begin developing literal superpowers. The Gone series tells a story about the various 300 or so kids trying to take leadership, fight with superpowers, defeat the Darkness (that guy is a whole other thing), struggle against the different factions that form, and most importantly, survive. The Gone series is easily one of the best series I've ever read. The first reason is probably the stakes. I've read books that have both done stakes well (The Poppy War, The Hunger Games) and books that haven't done stakes well. Near the end of the book, I couldn't even tell if Sam was going to survive. It's not just the main characters, however. Gone is one of those series that makes you care about its minor characters as well. In Light, our last book, many of my favorite characters did die, deaths that I didn't see coming. Sure, there were a few easy-to-spot death fodder characters (Sorry E.Z., Paint, and Andrew), but people like Howard? Brianna? Orc (ALL THAT DEVELOPMENT)?! My second point is that the series was realistic. Well, about as realistic as a story about a bunch of kids trapped in a giant, inverted fishbowl could be, anyway. I loved the rise of the Human Crew, made up of kids who hated and were envious of kids who had developed powers. Plus, later when the Dome became transparent and the outside world could see into the Dome, I loved Grant's incorporation of the media outlets and the internet into the story. The internet, disappointedly but realistically, fractured into coteries and argued over whether they should try to save the Perdido Beach kids or just nuke the Dome. My third and final favorite thing about the Gone series is just the characters in general. They were legitimately very, very well-written. Drake Merwin's fear of Brianna Berenson and the other's fear of Drake himself especially was delivered very well. Astrid Ellison's guilt over almost killing Little Pete and Caine Soren's unethicality were both phenomenal. My favorite bit of character development was probably from Charles Merriman. You really just need to read it to experience it.
