In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. A popular book that I highly recommend reading. A novel that always generates suspense in a dystopian world. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, is a great role model to all. Putting her family before herself showing selflessness and her actions throughout the stor y show that being courageous is important and essential to sur vival. North America is gone, after droughts, floods, hurricanes, and other weather disasters that lead to the fall of the world as we know it today, but a new nation arises from the ashes, Panem. Panem consists originally of 13 districts and its Capitol, centered in the modern Rocky Mountains, and the 13 districts are spread out across the remains of North America with the distance that it is from the Capitol dictating how rich it is. In the First Rebellion, the 13 districts rebel against the Capitol, leading to a brutal war, with the complete eradication of the 13th District, and the Hunger Games. A national broadcasted show that is hosted annually with Tributes, a boy and a girl, from each of the 12 remaining districts, and with them competing against each other to the death. In the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss is especially surprised that her sister, Prim, out of the 8,000 or so inhabitants of District 12, is chosen to be one of the Tributes to compete in the Hunger Games. How could her sister, sweet as she is, compete in such a deadly competition, a competition renowned for its cruelty, and its brutality? As such, Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place, leading her to compete in the Games, with an old acquaintance, the young child that gave her bread once, Peeta. How will Katniss survive against the 23 other contestants? Will she let the Capitol use her as one of the pieces in their brutal game to display and project the Capitol's power upon the Districts? These are the questions that you will have answered in the wondrous book by Suzzanne Collins, the Hunger Games. This book is wholly recommended by me, and everyone else that will even get past the first sentence for it is a deep, adventurous tale making you feel as if you were next to Katniss when she is surviving the deadly arena known as the Hunger Games.

Twelve districts. One Capitol. And an annual death count of twenty-four tributes sent out in an arena, where they will fight to the death. This is the problem that Katniss Everdeen faces along with all the other district members. Katniss lives in District 12 — the lowest of the low levels. Everybody is poor and there's rarely any food, so Katniss hunts out in the wild along with her best friend and hunting partner, Gale Hawthorne. But as usual, the reaping day comes, when two tributes — a boy and a girl — will be sent to the Capitol to be involved in the Hunger Games. But it's not Katniss's name that's picked — it's her sister, Primrose. As Katniss volunteers to take Primrose's place, the boy's tribute is picked — Peeta, the boy who once saved Katniss's family from starving. At the Capitol, Katniss is overwhelmed with delicacies that would've cost a fortune in District 12: oranges, coffee, buns, chicken, and even hot chocolate. The two meet their mentor, Haymitch, a man who loves to drink and isn't your average mentor. As the day of the Hunger Games slowly arrives, Katniss and Peeta work hard to improve their survival skills, with Katniss being a pro at bows and Peeta single-handedly excelling in arm-to-arm combat. But the Hunger Games has more to it than just winning — it involves love, alliances, betrayals, and death.
I recommend this book because it shows a future United States under the control of one place, the Capitol. It's a tale of bravery, family, love, friendship, and sacrifices.
