This book is about a girl named Lina. She is twelve and her city requires you to work at age twelve. Today is assignment day where the students receive their jobs. Lina's normally noisy classroom was silent when the mayor walked in. He was holding a paper bag. He explained how you get a job. He said that you grab a piece of paper from the bag and on the paper is the name of the job you will get. This is when we meet a new character in the story. Doon. He was hoping for electricians helper. Lina was hoping for messenger. Instead, Lina got what she thought was the worst one, pipeworks. Doon got messenger and threw a mini tantrum. After, Doon went to Lina and asked to trade. Lina had to say yes because she wanted messenger. Soon, Lina's grandma said something was missing but she didn't know what it was. Lina went to find her little sister, Poppy.A few days later, Lina's grandma found the thing. It was a note, except you can't really read it because Poppy chewed it up. Lina spent the next few days going to do her job and then decoding the note. She found out what the note said with Doon and they set off. They went through many challenges and also tried some sweet and yummy purple fruit. Then, they saw Ember below them. Lina realised that ember was actually underground! I recommend this book to people who like adventures.
