🌟 Recommendation Details

Undercover Latina follows fourteen-year-old Andréa Hernandez-Baldoquin, who comes from a family of international spies working for the Factory, a covert organization dedicated to protecting people of color. Andréa has spent her entire life training to become a full-fledged agent. When she finally gets her first official mission, she is given a huge challenge: she must go undercover as a light-skinned Latina named Ashley Cortez at a selective private school in Colorado. Her goal is to get close to a boy named Kyle, whose father is a dangerous white supremacist planning a major terrorist attack. To succeed, Andréa has to hide her Afro-Latina heritage and blend into a world dominated by wealth and privilege. As she navigates the complicated social dynamics of her new school, she finds herself walking a fine line between keeping her fake identity intact and staying true to who she really is, all while trying to stop a disaster before time runs out. Undercover Latina is a fast-paced and engaging spy novel. I really enjoyed the character of Andréa, especially her intelligence, quick thinking, and strong sense of culture. Aya de León does a great job weaving real-world discussions about race, identity, and privilege into an exciting action plot without making the story feel overly heavy or preachy. The dynamic between Andréa and her family members also adds a really nice layer of warmth and humor to the book. However, there were a few minor aspects of the book that I didn't enjoy as much. Certain parts of the romance plotline felt a bit predictable, and a few of the supporting characters at the school felt slightly one-dimensional compared to Andréa. Still, the high-stakes plot keeps you turning the pages from start to finish. For anyone looking for a fun, action-packed read with a smart and relatable protagonist, I recommend Undercover Latina.
