When a young Edmond Dantes is imprisoned on falsified charges of treason by his supposed friends right before he is to marry his fiancée, he is imprisoned without trial on the grim fortress of Château D'if, a prison island. During his attempts to escape, he meets a fellow prisoner named Abbé Faria, who he learns from. The Abbé deduces that his friends had conspired against him in order to further their own interests. The Abbé also educates Dantes, and tells him about a secret treasure that Faria had discovered previously. Motivated by vengeance, he escapes, finds the treasure, and with it, prepares his revenge against his former friends. Set in the early 1800s, the book overlaps many of the events surrounding Napoleon's exile and return to power, with Dantes being accused of being one of Napoleon's supporters, and Napoleon's defeat and characters' loyalties for and against Napoleon being central to the plot. I recommend this book because of its detailed and intriguing but not too difficult to follow plot, conflicting themes of vengeance and forgiveness, and the setting of the whole book make it a fascinating, yet lengthy read.
Peyton Hayward (UG 9-12 ) Due on the 12th and 27th of each month
