Princess of the Midnight Ball takes place in the fictional kingdom of Westfalin that had just won a war. A young soldier named Galen who spent most of his life on the battlefield is returning to his homeland to find work with his mother's sister. While traveling, he meets an old woman on the road, who gives him an invisibility cloak and a ball of black yarn after he gives her some food. In Bruch, Galen finds his mother's sister, and he is offered work as a gardener in the palace gardens, which he takes gladly.
The palace is home to twelve princesses, all born under the late Queen Maude. Galen soon finds out the mystery behind the princesses: every night, their dancing shoes are worn out beyond repair, and no one knows why, especially since their doors are locked, making it impossible for them to go anywhere. Galen decides to volunteer to solve the mystery of the dancing shoes.
Princess of the Midnight Ball is a fairytale-like story that has a truly sweet and symbolic ending. George uses amazing language and characterization to make the characters feel truly alive. Among the twelve sisters, there are lots of humorous banter and snappy quips that you'd expect to hear among actual sisters, which is a detail that I personally enjoyed.
However, there are some parts of the novel that I didn't like as much. The pacing and the overall speed that the story progressed at felt rushed at some times and too drawn-out in others. There weren't enough descriptions in some sections as well. The overall plot is enjoyable, and for anyone looking for a simple read without a lot of overcomplication, I recommend Princess of the Midnight Ball.
