This novel explores the themes of time and sleep through a first-person narrative. The protagonist suffers from a severe sleep disorder and is often in a semi-awake state. He frequently falls asleep while reading and feels as if he is dreaming upon waking. He often misses moments like his mother saying goodnight to him, the mantelpiece at his aunt's house in Combray, and other fragmented and confusing memories. At that time, the only guest in the house was Mr. Swann. Due to his reserved and discreet demeanor, the family was unaware of Swann's prominent status in high society. They did not know he was an esteemed member of the Jockey Club, a close friend of the Count of Paris and the Prince of Wales, and one of the most sought-after figures in the aristocratic circles of the Faubourg Saint-Germain. This is a very intriguing novel. I recommend this book because the author vividly and flexibly portrays the concept of time, weaving together stories from different periods with overlapping developments. Each character's life seems to drift along their own unique timeline.
