🌟 Recommendation Details

Peppe, who was a young boy, lived in a little tenement in Little Italy. His family recently immigrated to New York City, but needed money, so Peppe was determined to get a job. When he was hired as a street lamp lighter, he and his sisters were ecstatic, but his dad thought otherwise; in fact, he was furious that his son had a job like that. Still, Peppa loved the joyful feeling of walking through the evening in New York and lightning lamps aflame. Each following night, he came home to an angry dad and plummeting self-confidence; Peppe decided he wanted to quit. One day, however, his sister, Assunta, didn't come home at night, and his typically angry father pleaded with him, "The job of lamplighter is an important job…you will make me proud." Reluctant at first, he thought of his loving sisters who would always support him, and he headed out. At the last streetlamp he lit, Peppe finally found Assunta, who was cuddled up in a ball from her fear of the dark. Walking back to his tenement, he held his head up high again, believing that "one small flame is a promise for tomorrow." Reason for Recommendation: This touching picture book perfectly captures the bustling in the sidewalks of New York streets in the early 1900s and the struggle and hopes of new immigrant families. The heartfelt story is also paired with beautiful modern lamp-lit illustrations!
