On the night before Kate's 11th birthday, she decides to write a letter to her uncle Herbert, a man who was described to her as rich and irresponsible. In the letter, she asks:
"Dear Uncle Herbert— You've never met me but I'm your niece Kate, and since it is my birthday tomorrow and you are super rich do you think you could please send me a present?"
She puts the letter in the mailbox but doesn't expect anything since she doesn't know where he lives and does not put a stamp on the letter. However, Uncle Herbert shows up with a massive steam locomotive, named the Silver Arrow, on a similarly gigantic truck. When they put the train on some tracks installed in the backyard connected to some old tracks in the woods, the strange train magically starts chugging down the tracks, with Kate and her brother Tom inside. They find themselves on an adventure traveling across the globe and transporting animals to safer places.
