Five Survive is an intense thriller about 18-year-old Red and her friends who are on a road trip for spring break. They're excited for the beach, but their plans take a dark turn when their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere. With no cell service and no help in sight, things get even worse when someone starts shooting out their tires, making it clear that they're being targeted by someone. The group soon learns that one of them is hiding a secret, and the sniper is willing to kill to get it. As they try to figure out who the sniper is after and why, tensions rise, and their trust in each other crumbles. One thing is for sure, though: they won't all make it out alive to see the sun rise the next day. In my opinion, this book started out dull and moved quite slowly in many chapters. Holly Jackson's young adult novels typically move at a much faster and "exciting" pace, so perhaps that is one reason I thought Five Survive progressed a tad more leisurely than some other novels. However, this book does get more interesting and the plot becomes very fascinating sometime in the middle. It then becomes a gripping and edge-of-your-seat read that keeps you guessing until the end. Who's the sniper? Why are they after Red and her friends? If you enjoy thrillers with unexpected loops and twists, complex characters, and drama, this book is for you!
