"The Grace Year" is a dystopian novel centered around the inequality of women in society. It depicts an otherwise normal society, besides the fact that girls are sent away for a year when they turn sixteen. Women are seen as corrupt, and are sent to survive in the wilderness in order to get rid of their "tempting nature" and become pure. If they survive and are deemed cured of their "evil", they are able to return to society and live freely. The story follows Tierney James, a sixteen year old girl surviving her grace year among others her age. The girls are tested both physically and psychologically against the harsh wilderness and each other. I would recommend this book because it delves into the important theme of patriarchy, societal control, and lengths an individual will go to in order to obtain freedom. This novel demonstrates rebellion against oppression and the cruelty those are capable of in order to control others, which I believe is an extremely vital message to our society. Kim Ligget accomplishes this through her captivating and enthralling storytelling.
