Magic is running out. Godglass, a miraculous substance that can enhance physical properties of people, such as mental faculties, physical capabilities, and many other possibilities, is made with cindersand, a limited resource. It's also running out. When Demir Grappo hears his mother Adriana has been murdered, a retired politician and general who fled in exile after a disastrous campaign, returns to Ossa to take control of his guild-family, revenge. Also a goal is to complete a phoenix channel, a way to recharge spent godglass, a project that could restore Demir's family to their former glory. Others helping him include Kizzie Vorcien, an enforcer and friend Demir has hired to find his mother's killers; Idrian Sepluki, a soldier and friend of his; and Thessa Foleer, a maker of godglass, hired to create the phoenix channel. The investigation of Demir's mother's death and the work on the project she started bring Demir and his colleagues into a plot at the center of the world at large. I recommend this book because of the writing style and immersive worldbuilding by McClellan. The plot is engaging, even if some may think it simple. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to any fan of fantasy.
