Hearts Unbroken is about a highschool girl named Louise who faces racial tension and scorn at school for her being of native heritage. At school, Louise has troubles with boys as she somehow always finds her way to those that are extremely rude and ignorant towards people of color. To make matters worse, massive division and retaliation start at school when the school director casts three people of color into the school's musical, one of which being Louise's younger brother. The racial tension at school heightens, eventually taking a toll on Louise's own extracurriculars as well as her private life. Will things get better for Louise's family, and will the school finally grow more accepting of natives as well as other people of color?
I recommend this book because the author does a great job of articulating a message about racism into an easy to follow book about a teenage girl who faces struggles in highschool. The book is an emotional rollercoaster and offers a first hand perspective on racism and also showcases the far reaching effects of racism. Smith also offers political insight in her novel as she mentions the clash between liberal and conservative ideology in this novel.
