🌟 Recommendation Details

Land of Milk and Honey by C. Pam Zhang is set in a time where the earth is heavily polluted with smog that harms most of the planet's food sources. The story follows a struggling chef who applies for an unusual seeming job on a mountain in Italy. The mountain is one of the few places left on Earth that is not corrupted by the smog, and is owned by a wealthy man, who is referred to as her employer and appears to control much of the land's resources. The unnamed narrator discovers that her new job is not only as a chef, but that she is forced to take on a role to convince investors to continue to fund her employer's "project". I would recommend this book because it is told in a very unique way, which is a refreshing change from other stories. The narrator is unnamed, and the reader only learns about her through the way she interacts with others, and the little she mentions about her past. I think the characterization of her is very interesting, as well as her relationship with others that work on the mountain. This novel explores important themes of the reality of various qualities of life in our world, the effects of climate change, and manipulation.
