Jada Jones, a fourth-grader, is passionate about science and collects rocks, but feels sad because her best friend, Mari, recently moved into a new house. Jada's mother encourages her to make new friends at school, but that is not an easy task for Jada. However, when Jada's teacher announces the class will be researching and completing a project about rocks and minerals, which is an area that is very exciting and enjoyable for Jada to learn about, she begins to have a change in how she feels about school. Jada is placed in a group with two other girls, one of whom is Simone, who does not seem to be friendly toward Jada, and apparently brushes off some of Jada's ideas when they are brainstorming options for their project. Jada works to figure out how, in a possibly uncomfortable learning environment, they will all work together and make a new friend, and at the same time to be successful at their science project about rocks and minerals. During the entire project experience, Jada learns that being kind is important even for people who may not be kind in return. Jada eventually learns that Simone did not seem very welcoming to her because she was worried Jada would take her friend away from her. Jada also learns that she can work cooperatively with her group partner to create a winning project about rocks and minerals that won first place!
