Hate them or love them, you know what doctors are. You know what doctors do. You know what's up with doctors. And if you're Asian, chances are your average pediatrician is your role model. Or orthodontist. Or dermatologist. Or if you're really weird, a radiologist. Sure, we know all about them. Want to be them, in certain scenarios. But what is it actually like to be one? Before I read This is Going to Hurt, it's a question I've actually never thought about. A similar sentiment stands for police officers, firefighters, and other first responders. The only peek I have into the life of a cop so far is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And the only experience I have with firefighters is that one Halloween costume I wore in second grade. This is Going to Hurt offered the most intimate, in-depth, disgusting, hilarious, and my personal favorite memoir that I've ever read. And I've gone through some good ones, too. Anyway, This is Going to Hurt is a memoir about Adam Kay's career as a young doctor, specifically as a gynecologist. It consists of a series of diary entries detailing his day-to-day struggles, experiences, and efforts as a doctor. From the impact of his job on his daily interactions to traumatic experiences with patients to the conversations with new mothers, This is Going to Hurt is a very, very deep dive into the life of an average doctor in the UK. Honestly, the memoir kind of scared me. Don't get me wrong, it was funny, it was well-written, it was crafted with love and expertise and heart and soul, but even looking through the perspective of a doctor scared me. What do you mean a guy can just randomly start spewing blood everywhere? What do you mean you can still retrieve a living baby from a dead mother? What do you mean that Crocs are basically the best footwear ever invented? …I think I knew that last one already, actually. Anyway, Kay also presents a very personal and introspective look into the impact of being a doctor on his normal life. With a cast of people he's named after Harry Potter characters (It took me like, half the book to realize that), Kay also sheds light on how his relationship with his friends or loved ones have wavered at best and deteriorated at worst. This one made me feel bad. I'd never thought about how overworked doctors may be. How much they would have to sacrifice. This is Going to Hurt was definitely a roller coaster. Recommended for any and all.
