🌟 Recommendation Details

On April 20, 1914, coal miners at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company went on strike due to their company's refusal to grant them better working conditions, a shelter since they were evicted from company housing, and higher wages. By noon, a company wife sends a letter to the National Guards about her husband being kidnapped by miners due to his refusal to strike, but the Guard takes this as an excuse to raid the camp. Suddenly, on Easter Sunday in the dark, nonstop gunfire and shots rain down on the Ludlow striker tent colony causing men, women, and children to run for their lives or hunker down in unsanitary dirt cellars underneath their tents. Panic runs rampant, children scream, and chaos runs completely lost. Many lives are ended and justice seems nowhere even close. As a result, the only scene that remains that morning is debris and 19 lives are taken including strike leader Louis Tikas, twelve year old Frank Snyder, and many other children and women. Reason for Recommendation: In the 4th Book of the Horrors of History series, Anderson describes the Ludlow Massacre, a little known event in 1914, by switching between the perspectives of strikers and guardsmen to create suspense. Through twenty one historical photographs, including the mysterious figure of Frank Snyder on the front cover, Anderson beautifully illustrates the economic and political causes that led to atrocities.
