In the New Era, people are divided by their blood. There are people with Red blood and people with Silver. Silvers have supernatural abilities and are wealthy and high-ranking. This made them superior to the Reds, who had no powers and worked as servants for the Silvers. At eighteen, Reds were sent into the military if they didn't have a job or apprenticeship. Mare Barrow is a seventeen year old girl living in a village called Stilts. She is a Red, and doesn't have a job or apprenticeship, and is about to get conscripted, just like her 3 brothers. However, she is a thief, and a very good one at that. She also has a younger sister Gisa, who is adept at sewing and will become a seamstress for the Silvers when she comes of age. When Mare learns that one of her friends was to be conscripted due to his master dying, she thinks of a way to escape. She learns about Farley, who can help her. Farley is a captain of the Scarlet Guard, a group of Reds planning to overthrow the Silvers. Farley demands a hefty amount of money for pay, which Mare doesn't have, so she decides to steal from Silvers. She arrives at Summerton, but just then, news reports the Scarlet Guard had been carrying out several bombings in the area, causing widespread havoc. Mare was unable to get enough money to pay Farley, and when Gisa learns about this and tries to pickpocket a Silver, she gets her sewing hand broken, forcing her to quit her job. Out of guilt, Mare goes to a tavern and starts pickpocketing people, until she gets caught by a boy. He tells Mare that his name is Cal, and that he worked for the Palace. The next day, Mare learns that she was given a job at the King's palace. This is where she also learns that Cal is the King's son, or the crown prince. The Queenstrail was taking place, where the most powerful Silver nobility's daughters would compete to be able to marry Cal. While in the challenge, Mare displays electric powers against Cal's intended bride. She is captured due to having powers as a Red, but the King feared a rebellion would be imminent if it were found out that a Red could have powers. To prevent this from happening, he gives Mare a new life and identity, and marries her to Maven, the King's second son. Although Mare is allowed to say goodbye to her family, she is infuriated to learn that her favorite brother was executed for desertion. Due to this, she joins the Scarlet Guard, and finds many more people she's known. While in the Scarlet Guard, Mare has to carry along her duties as a noblewoman, but also be plotting the downfall of the Silvers. After many twists, explosions, and betrayals, will Mare find a way to make the Red and Silver worlds equal? I heavily recommend this book because it is a gripping fantasy/dystopian future book. Every character is written extremely well, and the twists and turns keep coming, even when you least expect it. The dynamic between each of the characters shifts throughout the book, and will keep readers wondering what comes next. This book won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award and is a New York Times Bestseller.

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with common Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own. To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betrothes her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal. Recommendation: A book that takes you on an adventure of magic, love, and betrayal.
