In Clementine and the Spring Trip, Sara Pennypacker gives us a glimpse into the life of a third-grader named Clementine, whose enthusiasm for springtime is equally as contagious as her energy level throughout each day. While Clementine is anticipating the arrival of springtime, she has also expressed some concerns regarding her mother's pregnancy, making her mother irritable, the fact that Bus 7 (which she rides) has an unpleasant odor, as well as whether or not everyone in her classroom likes their newest classmate, Olive (who is probably the coolest new girl that anyone has ever met). The highlight of the book occurs during a field trip to Plimoth Plantation. However, there is also an additional anxiety-inducing question in Clementine's mind about whether or not Olive will want to eat lunch with her at Plimoth Plantation. A "no-sound-while-eating" social rule applies to lunchtime. She becomes very anxious as to whether or not Olive will want to share her lunch with her. As the students are being shown around the plantation by a re-enactor, he shares with the students the importance of freedom and choice in how one believes he/she should live life as he/she wishes. This gives Clementine newfound courage to be bold enough to take a stand for herself and Olive, by exhibiting courage, giving others the respect that they deserve, and breaking some social rules as a result.
