It is the time where the Nazis hold their regime in Germany. They scour the streets, finding Jewish citizens and throwing them into concentration camps, where they'll be beaten and tortured to death. This is the life Yanek finds himself in. Yanek and his family are Jews, and they must not let their true identity be known. He must hide, escape, and fight for his life if he and his family want to survive.
I recommend this book because it is such a thrilling and captivating novel. Alan Gratz once again captures the true story of a Jewish boy and transforms him into pen and paper.

On September 1, 1939, World War Two started, and so did the suffering. After Kraków is brought under Nazi control, a drastic change comes into the city. Yanek Gruener, a young Polish Jew, and his family are brought into the ghetto system, where all the Jews of a city would be rounded up and sent there to suffer. Day by day, rumors spread of the Jews being rounded up and being shot, or sent to work for their captors in deadly work camps. One day, Yanek is forced to confront these fears, by being sent to Plaszów Concentration Camp, where the sole purpose that you can try to do is survive. There, Yanek learns of the fates of his family from his Uncle, Uncle Moshe. This story is a MUST for recommendation as Alan Gratz brings us to explore another perspective from the devastating and brutal Second World War. The story puts us on edge in the terrifying journey Yanek must take to live to see the day when the Allies would march into their concentration camp to save them.
