Freshman year of high school can be tough, especially if you have Tourette's syndrome and mysterious electrical powers. Due to his ability to shock people, jump start his mother's car by simply holding the battery connectors, and knock down bullies, Michael Vey, a 14 year old boy, has recently moved to Idaho due to an incident in his former town. Keeping his powers a secret is essential, but he accidentally reveals them when trying to defend himself from Wade, the bully. However, he also learns that his crush, Taylor, also has electric abilities. Confused and intrigued, Michael reaches out to Ostin, his best friend and a child genius, and they find out a strange discovery at the hospital where Michael was born. A new medical machine known as the MEI had malfunctioned and only 17 children, called the Glows, had survived; this incident was covered by the public by the doctor, Dr Hatch, for a mysterious reason. Meanwhile, Michael's mom decides to take him out to a restaurant that night after being concerned that Taylor and he received scholarships from the mysterious Elgen Academy, but a group of teenagers, the most notable one called Nichelle, arrive and drain his powers. Michael wakes up discovering that his mom and Taylor have been kidnapped, and it could be due to Taylor's evil sister Tara. It turns out Taylor has been taken to Elgen Academy where she is treated highly by Dr Hatch, but it is all a fake setup. Therefore, when she tries to disobey Dr Hatch with her powers, she is drained by Nichelle and put to Floor D, the Purgatory. Michael tries his best to free Taylor, but he is kidnapped and put into a brutal torture cell, Cell 25. Later, Michael, Taylor, and Ostin are all placed together in Cell 25, due to their rebellions, to be killed by Zeus, but with Michael's absorption powers and Taylor's mind reading powers, they find that Dr. Hatch had tricked Zeus into thinking that they had killed his family. This causes Zeus to side with Michael and form the Electroclan to find and fight against Dr Hatch who had escaped the building with the other loyal glows. Reason for Recommendation: Evans, a New York Times bestselling author, delivers main characters Taylor with intelligence and popularity and Michael with an emotional backstory. The characterization of the protagonists truly brings a whole different dimension to the fast-paced science fiction, and if you enjoy the strange electric powers combined with a riveting mission, the Michael Vey series is perfect.
