At the start of the novel, Han "Cuffs" Alister, a young retired streetlord, and his friend Fire Dancer meet three wizards they find that are setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. As they confront the wizards, Han takes a mysterious amulet from one of the wizards. Later that night, we find out that Hans was born with silver cuffs around his wrists that have been magicked. His parents tell him of the Demon King, and he shows the amulet to them. They glance at it and immediately determine that it belonged to the Demon King. They tell him to protect it with his life, especially because it is currently believed that the High Wizard's son, Micah Bayar has it. Meanwhile, we skip to Raisa, the princess' point of view. She is about to turn 16, the age when she can get married. But the only problem is; she doesn't want to. As her mother, the Queen, wants her to get married to Micah Bayars, she is rather in love with the guard general's son, Amon. The plot thickens as she decides to run away from the protected castle and goes outside after dark with Amon. She runs into Hans, who decides to take her away from Amon. As they slowly become closer, they find themselves retelling the fables they've been told, and surprisingly, they don't match up. Raisa's version of the Demon King was that he was an evil person who nearly destroyed the world. Hans' version was that the Demon king was simply in love, and that's why he decided to do so. Together, they embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of the amulet, and question everything they've been told about the Demon King. I would recommend this book because it does an excellent job storybuilding for the next books which I believe can inspire many young readers how to write their own novels and come up with their own plots.
