Told in the past… Helmuth is a young boy who loves Germany and their possible new leader, Adolf Hitler. He loves Hitler's raspy voice that screams Germany and the way Hitler charms crowds. One day, he'll fight alongside his half-brothers, Hans and Gerhard, for Germany. He knows it's true. In his heart. Told in the present… In the small cell, Helmuth paces back and forth. Back and forth. It's a Tuesday. Back and forth. The executioner works on Tuesdays. Told in the past… But as Helmuth grows up, every day, the rights of people are diminishing. First, the Jews are removed. Helmuth never sees some of his classmates again. Then, the right to listen to foreign radios is banned and everybody who uses the telephone or mail is tracked. Helmuth, just like anybody, thinks that the Nazis are protecting them from communists, knows that Hitler means no harm. But it's the arrival of one man, one childhood elderly friend back from a concentration camp, that changes this young boy's view on all of the German leaders. Told in the present… Helmuth knows that a guillotine awaits just outside. That, at any moment, the guards could come into his tiny cell with only a bare bed and a slop bucket and speak the words, "Come with us. It is time." He prays to God, hopes with all his heart that before he dies, Rudi, Karl, Mutti, Oma, Opa, Gerhard, Hans, and even the unlikable Hugo will receive his story and letters. He knows that he promised his two best friends that they would meet again, and he knows it is true. Told in the past… Helmuth begins writing. Writing articles. Writing pamphlets. Writing about the injustice of Nazis. Writing about the suffering that Brother Worbs had to endure. He keeps himself anonymous, keeps his friends Rudi and Karl out of it. No names. He promised. He smuggles the leaflets onto streets, onto anywhere public. If they are caught, he will take full responsibility, even if it means death. He invokes to God that he won't get caught. But he knows that God knows everything. God knows the horrors he will experience. And God knows that, throughout all of it, his friends will be safe, just like Helmuth promised. I recommend this book because it is about a young boy who grows up in a household of mixed emotions about Hitler. His mother and stepfather love him, while his grandmother and grandfather are not too fond of him. Helmuth must grow up and learn that the Nazis will kill anybody who dares to speak out against them — setting the whole theme and title of this book. This book also tells a true story, as shown in the back of the book, included with pictures. Helmuth Hübner is known for his extraordinary bravery and for being the youngest person ever executed by the Nazis. .
