🌟 Recommendation Details

Split into four segments across several decades in Afghanistan, A Thousand Splendid Suns comments on the conditions of Afghans during the constant power struggle between their governments and other countries. The novel begins by introducing Mariam, the illegitimate child of a wealthy businessman who is forced into an arranged marriage with an older man. At only 15 years old, Mariam moves from the home where she had lived her entire life, grieves the sudden death of her mother, and accepts the abandonment from her father, who refused to take her in following her mother's death. After several years of marriage to Rasheed, the war has escalated, and their neighbor's home was struck by a missile. In the wreckage, Rasheed and Mariam rescue the neighbor's teenage daughter, Laila, and nurse her back to health. After having lost her parents in the explosion, Laila joins Mariam and Rasheed's family. I recommend this novel as a fantastic commentary on the state of Afghanistan and its restrictions on women. Mariam and Laila face enormous struggles stemming from both Rasheed's temper and the government's strict laws against women's freedom.
