The Penultimate Peril is the second to last book of A Series of Unfortunate Events(with penultimate meaning second to last). This time, the Baudelaires (orphans whose wealthy parents died in a fire) are given a job at "The Hotel Denouement" from Kit Snicket, as they have to serve people at the massive hotel and help them around. At the same time, they are requested to be disguised as hotel workers and find out more about the evil members of VFD. At the hotel, since the orphans are disguised, Count Olaf and the other evil people within his group have no idea the orphans whose money they are trying to steal are actually right under their noses. When hosting a banquet at the hotel (which actually includes many evil and good characters from the past books in the series) , the Baudelaires accidentally kill a member of the hotel. Count Olaf takes the opportunity to try and get the Baudelaires into trouble. Many witnesses, foes, and allies all take turns talking about the Baudelaires to try and reach a verdict. Will the Baudelaires be able to convince everyone? Will their horrible luck catch up to them? With its suspenseful mystery, surprising character returns, and complicated plot, this book will keep the reader glued to the book from beginning to end.
