🌟 Recommendation Details

Some of the best fantasy worldbuilding I've ever read came from Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, each of them just adds more and more backstory and depth to the entire series, consisting of 41 total books, and while it isn't the first one, Guards! Guards! is a good point to start, with engaging characters, a consistent setting, and an intriguing plot, as well as the virtue of being first in a series about the characters in the book. This book is set in Discworld, which is a fictional world where the planet is flat and resides on the backs of four massive elephants, supported by a great turtle flying through space. This book and others set here don't take themselves too seriously, often satirically referencing the real world. In this book, Captain Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch finds himself protecting the city against a dragon, which mysteriously appears and disappears at a moment's notice. He is helped by the rest of the night watch, a kleptomaniac officer named Nobby Nobbs, an older member named Fred Colon, and a new recruit oblivious of what the rules of the city are, Carrot Ironfoundersson. Overall this book is a great starting place for people looking to get into Discworld novels, as well as introducing a fascinating cast of characters that show up throughout the entire series.
