The Art Lesson is a book about a little boy that always dreamed of being an artist. He drew pictures everywhere. He put up pictures in his bedroom and his whole family had some drawings of him. When he was old enough to go to kindergarten, Tommy was excited. His brother told him that there was a real art teacher that came to the school to teach the students. But sadly, Miss Bird, his teacher, said they weren't going to have art lessons until next year. But she said that they would be able to paint. Tommy didn't like it. Their paints were made by Miss Bird, and she made them by mixing powders with water. Tommy couldn't wait for next year. He practiced over the summer. On Monday, he brought his own crayons to school. Miss Landers, who was the first-grade teacher, was not very happy about that. "Everyone must use the same crayons," she said. "SCHOOL CRAYONS!" Miss Landers introduced the art teacher, Mrs. Bowers, to the class. "Class," Mrs. Bowers said, "because Thanksgiving is not too far away, we will learn to draw a Pilgrim man, a Pilgrim woman and a turkey. Watch carefully and copy me." Copy? COPY? He knew that real artists did not copy. What will he do?
