🌟 Recommendation Details

Helen Keller's memoir, The Story of My Life, is transcribed from Keller's own retelling of the struggles and triumphs of her life. Keller first became deaf and blind due to a febrile illness at just nineteen months old, leaving her to overcome a massive hurdle: learning to communicate without sight or hearing. Learning was extremely difficult for Keller, as she was deaf and lacked the visual ability to understand sign language. Learning objects by touch without the ability to be audibly told what she was touching was very difficult. However, eventually Keller experienced a breakthrough and crafted her own form of communication where another person would use sign language in the palm of Keller's hands so she could feel the different hand shapes being made rather than looking at them. I recommend Keller's memoir to spread awareness about the capabilities of people with disabilities and to show how extraordinary it was for Keller, who was deaf and blind, to learn to integrate with a society that relies so heavily on hearing and seeing.
