Janie Crawford, a "main character" vibed middle-aged Black woman (yes, I know she IS the main character, but I'm being serious: she is attractive, strong, and confident) returns to Eatonville after being gone for a long time, and people immediately start gossiping about her, especially about what happened to her husband, Tea Cake. However, only her friend Pheoby really listens to her, so Janie can tell the story to her. Janie was raised by her grandmother and was pushed into marrying Logan Killicks, an old farmer, for safety and security. However, the relationship has always felt empty to Janie, so when she met Joe Starks, a smooth, flirty man, she runs away with him. However, Joe isn't much better, as he treats Janie more like an object than an actual person or partner. After almost 20 years of marriage, Janie finally stands up to her, making Joe beat her and then fall quite ill. On Joe's deathbed, Janie visits him for the first time in months and ends up berating him while he dies. For the first time, she feels free and unbothered. Janie continues to live her new independent life until she meets Tea Cake, a man twelve years her junior. What happens next is ACTUALLY shocking (like, seriously, finish the book. Some crazy stuff happens). I recommend this book because, when I say you won't know what's happening and what's real or not, I mean it. This might not even be a good book for you if you don't enjoy reading about somewhat violent events and some crazy plot hooks and twists.
