🌟 Recommendation Details

Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man should not be confused with H.G. Well's The Invisible Man, which is a tale about a man who is physically invisible. Ellison's The Invisible Man is a story about a Black man who has not found his place in the 20th-century United States. Despite being the protagonist, the young, colored man who narrates the novel is never defined by a name, thus leaving him effectively anonymous to the reader and the rest of the people he encounters. The man explores the states of the country but feels that his identity is unclear, even to himself. Thus, he begins a journey to understand his identity in order to find freedom in being acknowledged in society. I recommend this novel as a wonderfully illuminating tale of self-discovery as well as a cautionary tale of the isolating effects of society. The novel explores several important themes of race, religion, and the preservation of cultures.
