Jack Torrance is a writer and recovering alcoholic hired at the Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains as a winter caretaker. He brings along his wife Wendy and son Danny, hoping to rekindle their relationship broken by Jack's alcoholism. Unbeknownst to Jack or Wendy, Danny possesses psychic powers known as "The Shining" that lets him read minds, see the future, and look into the past. At the hotel, the Torrances are the only family living there, so they need to find something to do. First, they meet Dick Hallorann, the chef of the hotel who also possesses "The Shining." Danny, with his powers, is able to see the hotel's dark past, as well as many ghosts and visions. Although he doesn't inform his parents about these visions, he warns Wendy to never leave Jack alone at the hotel. He soon also realizes that his own presence is making the supernatural activity stronger, making the hotel able to turn past apparitions into real people. The winter's snow leaves no escape from the hotel, and the Torrances are fully shut in. The hotel, even with enhanced powers, still has trouble possessing Danny. Instead, it turns its head to Jack. First, it leads him to a scrapbook of the hotel's dark history. As Jack develops cabin fever and spirals into mental insanity, he destroys the hotel's radio and snowmobile, shutting off any means of escape. After a particularly rough fight with Wendy, Jack starts to see cabinets full of liquor and parties with ghosts. He then sees the ghost of Delbert Grady, a previous hotel caretaker that murdered his family. Although he initially resists, he eventually gives in to the darker side of the hotel, and Wendy and Danny must try to stay alive while somehow restoring Jack to his original state of mind. I'm sure we've all seen many clips from the The Shining movie, such as the iconic "Here's Johnny" or the Grady twins in matching blue dresses in the hallway. Overall, this book is a classic of the horror and thriller genre, and the scenes and characters are written with ample realness to them, making this book an absolute page turner.
