🌟 Recommendation Details

We all know Stephen King as the "King of Horror" from his books The Shining and It, but all great authors have to start somewhere. Carrie was Stephen King's debut novel, but it still resonates with readers to this day. Carrie White was never a normal child. From the age of three, strange things started to go on around her. Rocks would fall from the sky and screws would come loose without anyone touching them. When Carrie was sixteen, after a particularly tough gym class, she had her first period. At that point, her dad had been long dead and her mom never explained what menstruation was to her, believing that it was a sign of having committed a great sin. Carrie was always bullied at school for her weight, her clothes, and the religious beliefs her mother had implanted onto her. When she had her first period, there was no exception. That day after school, in frustration, she pushes a kid off of a bicycle with her mind, and starts to piece the pieces together. It was that day she realized she had telekinesis powers. That day, she questions her mom for never explaining what menstruation was, but her mom refuses to explain, but instead locks Carrie in a closet for having sinned. While the girls that bullied Carrie were given detention, they were spiteful of her even more, and decided to pull a prank to humiliate her in front of the whole school during prom night. What could go wrong? It's not like the whole city would get set on fire, right? I heavily recommend this book because it's an amazing start to an amazing career, especially since it was almost discarded. The characters all have their own (and very unique) personalities, and it all ties together perfectly with a climactic ending. This book has been adapted into multiple movies and a broadway musical.
