(SPOILER ALERT) In the cell in the king's dungeon, a thief paces. His name—or so he says—is Gen. Gen claims he can tell anything, proved by the fact that he stole the king's seal, which was what landed him in the dungeon in the first place when he went bragging about it to every wine shop in town. The king of Sounis's highest advisor, the magnus, then seeks for Gen. He thought that Gen could be a valuable tool in stealing Hamiathes's Gift, which is in the shape of a stone. Legend states that whoever held the Gift owned the country of Eddis. When he had the Gift, the king of Sounis would marry the Queen of Eddis, own two countries, and eventually invade Attolia. The king and magnus then promise to free the thief if he can get the Gift for them. So the journey begins. The magnus's two apprentices, named by Gen as Useless the Elder and Useless the Younger are part of the party, as well as Pol, who was sent to watch over Useless the Younger. They travel to the temple where the Gift is said to be held, and Gen has three days to steal the Gift. He steals it on the third day, and the party travels back to Sounis. However, they had a fight with some soldiers of Attolia and lost the Gift in the process. They eventually get captured once more, during which Useless the Elder and Pol get killed and Gen gets fatally injured by a betrayal. Despite his injury, Gen leads his party to escape the kingdom, where they head back to Sounius on foot. While in the country of Eddis, they get caught by guards once more and brought before the Queen of Eddis, where she glances at Gen and says, "Oh, it's you Eugenides." Gen turned out to be the Queen of Eddis's thief. He steps forward, gives her the stone that he stole from the magnus and hid in his braid, and faints. This Newberry Award-winnning book that has inspired countless authors will keep you on the edge of your seat. Turner has weaved a sense of excitement into this compelling adventure while also keeping it mysterious and realistic. If you ever get the chance to read The Thief, definitely do so.
