Twelve-year-old Jimmy, who is itching for adventure, is upset that his father won't give him a horse and that he has to work in the family business… So he leaves his home for a visit that ends up lasting three years after meeting two boys who offer him a horse in exchange for a visit to their chief's mother. During this time, he learns about the Indian way of life and satisfies his thirst for adventure with a number of foolish and heroic deeds. Jimmy, horrified by the scalp dance, but also ashamed of his own people and heartbroken over the terrible losses of his new family, reluctantly makes the decision to go back home to stop a war—and for freedom.
I recommend this book because Gregory balances a moving, heartfelt book with some of her own twists and turns.
