This book is written in free verse and haiku, so it's more of a verse memoir than a novel. The entire book talks about the life of the author and how it's like to grow up as an african american girl and how she ended up as a writer. Jacqueline, growing up as a grandchild in South Carolina, shaped her entire personality. So instead of breaking your entire mind reading, you could just read haiku verses instead.
