🌟 Recommendation Details

Freak the Mighty is about the friendship of two young boys as they navigate the hardships of life while living with disabilities. Max has a learning disability and lives with his grandparents after his father, Kenny, murdered his mother, and his curious friend Freak has a physical condition which restricts his bodily growth. Being disabled, both boys face ridicule from other school students and largely keep to themselves. Freak, being much smaller for his age due to his condition, likes to ride atop Max's shoulders whilst yelling "Freak the Mighty!", and the boys form a bond that is challenged when Freak's condition threatens his life and Max's father threatens his. I recommend this book because it is a fun and inclusive tale that features characters with disabilities that one usually would not see in stories. The book not only brings awareness to the boys' diseases but also destigmatizes them as the book shows us that people with diseases are just like everybody else. The book is heartfelt and full of emotion and is a great story to teach the importance of empathy.
