Believing that her husband had died when he failed to return from a voyage at sea, The Scarlet Letter's protagonist, Hester Prynne, begins a new relationship. However, when she becomes pregnant out of wedlock, Hester is publicly punished for adultery. Per her punishment, she is forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her dress, denoting her as an adulterer to her peers. Additionally, she must stand in front of the town on a scaffold for three hours. As she is serving her time on the scaffold, Hester spots her supposed-to-be-dead husband. Enraged by Hester's infidelity, her husband adopts an alternate identity as a doctor so he can talk to her while she is imprisoned. Giving her an ultimatum, he insists she must keep his identity and their marital status a secret (to save his dignity after her public infidelity) or he will be forced to kill the father of her baby. Thus, Hester adopts a quiet life with her daughter as an outsider of the village, but she can never escape the scarlet letter still worn on her clothing. I recommend this novel as a literary classic for its social commentary on the unforgiving nature of society. Hester is reduced to the marking on her dress and shamed by her peers while simultaneously suffering from her own guilt. · A"
